Multiple Dropbox accounts - at once - no user switching – Remons TechNotes

Multiple Dropbox accounts – at once – no user switching

Tired of moving back and forth between user accounts just because you need a file from a second or third dropbox account? Sure you can use the web version but with three or more accounts, even that becomes tiresome.

Enter; MultiDropbox

Yeah, I could not think of a better name, but hey, it’s the thought that counts.

Do you want to know how to get more than one Dropbox account in sync on the same user, no switching, no web-apps, just functional? then read on.

First step is to get this package for multi-dropbox.

Unzip the package and you will find two files;

  • multi-dropbox.sh
  • multi-dropbox.apptpl.tgz

These files need to stay together, and wherever you place them, multi-dropbox.sh must be in your PATH, so /usr/local/bin is a nice place to start. If not, you will have to start the script by typing the full path in Terminal, which is o.k. too if you want to.

Make sure multi-dropbox.sh is executable

Shell commandchmod 755 /path/to/multi-dropbox.sh

To view a short introduction, execute

Shell commandmulti-dropbox.sh help

This will tell you a few things you need to know and I’ll repeat them here;

The command

multi-dropbox.sh add
will generate a new profile and start Dropbox for you with that new empty profile. You can set it up as normal. This profile will however not be loaded when your computer starts or when you manually load Dropbox. You need a loader for that;

The command

multi-dropbox.sh install
will generate an app and place it on your Desktop. This app you only need ONCE, it will load ALL extra Dropboxes. It’s placed on the Desktop for safety concern, move it to the Applications folder and add it to your start-up list (System Preferences > Users & Groups > you > Login Items > + )

IMPORTANT: When you configure your new dropbox profile, be sure to do an Advanced installation and pick a logical location for your data. Also you will need to add the Dropbox shortcut to your original dropbox folder in Finder yourself as Dropbox will replace it with the newly created one.

Optionally you can migrate your “normal” Dropbox account so it will start when running MultiDropbox.app. Not required, but if you want to make sure you

  • Quit Dropbox before you migrate
  • Remove Dropbox from the Login Items list

before you

multi-dropbox.sh migrate

As always, I use this myself, the very one reason I created this in the first place, but I do NOT take any responsibility for data-loss. Luckily, Dropbox offers the tools you need to get files back in case something goes wrong.

If you want to stop using MultiDropbox altogether,

  • UNMIGRATE your original dropbox if you migrated it
  • Quit all dropboxes
  • remove these files/folders;
    • /Applications/MultiDropbox.app
    • ~/Library/MultiDropbox
  • remove MultiDropbox from your Login Items list
